expected to release new stadium renderings in 2026
Plans continue to move forward with the Chiefs new stadium, expected to be completed by the start of the 2031 season. On Friday Chiefs’ President Clark Hunt announced that the renderings for their new $3 billion project will be released later this year.
The plans for the project were announced back in December by Kansas Governor Laura Kelly and team Chairman Clark Hunt. It is expected to seat 65,000 fans, which is 10,000 fewer than Arrowhead at 73,426.
The new domed stadium will be built in Wyandotte County, Kansas. It will be near The Legends, which is a large shopping and commercial area. Dating back to the summer, Hunt has put emphasis on wanting to enhance the fan experience in renovations at Arrowhead.
The move is due to the state of Kansas having offered a more suitable finance package that includes the STAR bonds currently implemented in comparison to the Missouri proposal.
“Frankly, not everything was resolved that needed to be resolved. We just didn’t get there for the timeline,” Hunt said in December.
Hunt continued by recognizing what leaving Arrowhead behind means for the franchise and fans. “There is some pain leaving Arrowhead, and I’ll be at the top of that list,” he continued.
The stadium will feature the latest technology to enhance the fan experience. It will feature new stadium video boards, concession stands and expanded parking. The shopping centers and entertainment will be a focal point in enhancing the fan experience. The new stadium will feature new sideline clubs and suites. A new activation zone will be added, which will enhance the pregame tailgating experience.
Sixty percent of the project is being covered by the state of Kansas through STAR bonds, which are sales tax and revenue bonds. The project is following a 60-40 model, which means the additional 40% of the $3 billion is privately funded. The Hunt family is contributing $1 billion.
This model has the potential for new taxes to be added in the future to cover the revenue lost due to the impact the project will have on the natural revenue growth. The team will also pay a $7 million annual rent for the stadium.
